Limb Salvage
Treatments We Offer

Limb Salvage

Limb salvage is specialized care for patients who are at risk of losing part of a foot or leg because of severe infection, non-healing wounds, poor circulation or deformity. The goal is to preserve as much function as possible and keep you walking on your own feet.

During his residency, Dr. Gathani focused extensively on limb salvage, including care for veterans and other high-risk patients, and on Charcot reconstruction with external fixation.

Who may benefit from limb salvage

  • Patients with severe diabetic foot ulcers or infections
  • Osteomyelitis (bone infection) in the foot or ankle
  • Charcot foot and ankle deformity
  • Wounds complicated by poor circulation
  • Patients who have been told amputation may be necessary
How We Help

How we help

  • 01

    Thorough evaluation

We assess the wound, bone, circulation and overall health to understand every factor involved.

  • 02

    Infection control

Treatment may include antibiotics, debridement and, when necessary, surgical removal of infected bone or tissue.

  • 03

    Reconstruction

Surgical options can include correcting deformity and stabilizing the foot and ankle, sometimes with external fixation.

  • 04

    A team approach

We coordinate with vascular surgeons, infectious disease specialists and your other doctors to give you the best possible outcome.

When to See a Podiatrist

Schedule a visit if you notice:

  • A foot wound that is getting larger or deeper
  • Black or darkened skin on the toes or foot
  • Signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, drainage or fever
  • Sudden swelling or a change in the shape of the foot
  • A recommendation for amputation and you would like another opinion

If you have a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
